Might be a silly question, but is it a rot?

I had a friend with an old RX-3 once. I’ll never forget the time I ran into him merging onto the highway. I was in the Z31 with the roof off at night maybe 50m back from him, when I heard bang that literally made me jump in my soft brown 80s seat. The RX had backfired and shot flame.

Realized it was him, caught him up and we cruised on down to Rosebud together. Ah, life was simpler then.

These cars are sick.

My friend has an RX-4 sedan too. It’s yellow and quite original. It also makes a lot of exhaust backfire (visible but not very loud).

That’s glorious. More road cars should be that much fun.

Are you Australian/NZ? It seems relatively common over here, but not anywhere else.

I’m from Finland and so is my friend. That certain RX-4 was originally sold to Sweden from where my friend imported it. It had some rust issues and tired engine that has been since rebuilt. There is also one coupe that has been imported. I haven’t yet seen it, but I did meet the owner during one car gathering.

The RX-4 hasn’t been ever sold here. The local Mazda dealer brought two RX-2s to Finland but both were eventually sold outside Finland. Really small number of RX-7s have been sold sold here though.

929 was available here, but I don’t remember ever seeing a running 70's model. The 4 cylinder Mazda engine used in 929s was less reliable than the Wankel, which might the reason. My friend has one 929 spare part body shell, but it has the ridiculous looking facelifted front end.

Sounds like you have some goddam awesome friends! Especially considering how little support Mazda gave your poor country.

They seem to have been pretty popular here, strange for a country that’s usually so into the V8s. This friend of mine was a big dude, he barely fitted in the damn cars lol.
